Abstract

This study aims to analyze Islamic values and environmental ethics in eco-pesantren practices, focusing on how pesantren residents understand, interpret, and apply religious values in daily environmental activities. The study responds to the need for deeper qualitative understanding of environmental education in Islamic boarding schools, especially how values such as amanah, khilafah, cleanliness, simplicity, and social responsibility shape ecological behavior. This research used a qualitative case study design at Eco Pesantren Daarut Tauhid, Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia, from September 2025 to November 2025. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving 20 to 24 participants, including pesantren leaders, ustaz, environmental program managers, senior santri, alumni, and local residents. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings reveal four main themes: environmental care as religious responsibility, habituation of ecological behavior in daily pesantren life, leadership and role modeling, and eco-pesantren as social and spiritual empowerment. The study shows that Islamic environmental ethics becomes meaningful when it is embedded in routine, discipline, leadership, and collective culture. This study contributes to Islamic environmental ethics, eco-theology, and pesantren-based environmental education by explaining how religious values move from doctrine into lived ecological practice. The findings imply that eco-pesantren programs need stronger curriculum integration, continuous mentoring, technical management, and community participation.
